Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  • At least an advanced University Degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary public health, epidemiology or relevant animal health related field. A PhD degree will be an added advantage.

General Experience

  • At least 7 years of proven experience in public and/or private sector animal health services at national, regional or international levels.
  • At least 7 years’ experience working on management of priority transboundary animal diseases in ECOWAS region;
  • At least 7 years’ working knowledge of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standards and the WTO SPS Agreement;
  • At least 7 years working knowledge of evaluation and assessment of various aspects of veterinary services using tools such as PVS, JEE etc.

Specific Experience

  • Experience in delivering capacity development interventions for veterinary services in key competency areas for prevention and control of transboundary animal diseases based on WOAH standards;
  • Proven knowledge and experience on harmonization of disease prevention and control in cross border areas with focus on the ECOWAS region;
  • Proven record of familiarization with and participation in policy processes for adoption of instruments, initiatives and development of recommendations by ECOWAS and AU Policy Organs
  • Experience in formulating regional and continental animal health strategies and frameworks;
  • Demonstrated experience in the principles and practice of risk analysis as a tool for facilitating safe trade in animals and animal products

Position: Rhino Programme Officer

Position: Post – Doctoral Fellow Or Associate Scientist, Quantitative Genetics

About the position: The successful candidate will lead the development of on-farm sparse testing experimental designs and the development of rapid cycle genomic selection pipelines for hybrid and line crops using stochastic simulation, analysis of field trials, and the assessment of the on-farm selection through the comparison of genotypic performance on the research stations and under farmers’ management.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop rapid cycle genomic selection breeding strategies for the CIMMYT-Maize hybrid breeding program and the CIAT-Bean line breeding program using AlphaSimR.
  • Evaluate different strategies to maximize genetic gain in collaboration with breeders.
  • Develop and assess genomics-assisted on-farm sparse testing experimental designs with 3-5 unreplicated genotypes tested across a broad sample of smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Analyze data from on-farm testing and testing o research stations to identify parents for population improvement and candidates for product development.
  • Implement a desired gains selection index that combines multi-trait information coming from on-farm trials, on-station trials, or both.
  • Development and refinement of on-farm trial data analysis pipelines to provide real-time decision support to the breeding programs.
  • Assess the value of on-farm by estimation of genetic correlations between, and heritability of, on-station and on-farm performance to predict direct and correlated genetic gains using data collected from on-farm and on-station experiments.
  • Work collaboratively with the breeding teams and multi-disciplinary scientists involved in this project. Communicate basic theory, strategies, and results on a regular basis.
  • Interact and report to the quantitative genetics team to plan breeding program and experimental design simulations, data analysis, calculation of selection indices for co-selection of traits measured on the farm and/or on the station.
  • Lead and contribute to publications derived from this project.

Education/ Work Experience Requirements: 

  • PhD in plant breeding, quantitative genetics, biometrics, or related fields with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. Experience in private industry is a plus but not required.
  • Excellent understanding and strong interest in applying modern quantitative genetics and biometrics tools in plant breeding (genomic-assisted breeding tools, linear mixed models, etc.)
  • Expertise in statistical modeling and data analysis using R.
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively and respectfully in a diverse, multicultural, and multidisciplinary work environment.
  • Good reporting and communication skills in English (working language) and the ability to present complex concepts and results with a non-specialist audience.

HiH EA is part of the Hand in Hand (HiH) network that seeks to reduce poverty through sustainable job creation. HiHEA works with the marginalized, vulnerable poor rural and peri-urban smallholder farmers (80% women) to help lift themselves out of poverty through the power of entrepreneurship.

Assignment:

  • HIHEA  seeks to promote diverse production, marketing, financing of agricultural value chains through member individual enterprises; and their aggregation producer organizations ( POs). The main aim of these short term assignment is to strengthen capacity of 30 –Producer Organization (POs); to enhance service delivery, access to markets and credit facilitation to at-least 16,000 smallholders individually and in their aggregation units. The assignment has 3 specific and interrelated objectives:
  • Enhance governance and entrepreneurial skills of target POs

Deliverables:

  • Review and Profile target POs (using CPI tool) to identify their capacity needs, and initiate an organizational development process to improve their governance and management capacities to become bankable and sustainable businesses.  
  • Facilitate the POs to formulate strategy plans to guide their operations, identify demanded services by their member and undertake growth (joint selling, Buying and membership) outreach programs.
  • Work with POs management and HiH EA team to Set 3 – 6 month’s growth target milestones.

Position: Lead Agronomist

About the position: The Lead Agronomist will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of all field activities for the project under the sorghum value chain. He/she will be responsible for on-boarding agro-entrepreneurs using organization’s business model. He/she will ensure that sorghum farmers joining the program receive quality extension services, access quality inputs and aggregate and market their produce every season. He/she will be responsible for mobilising appropriate resources to consolidate and report field monitoring data and gather useful learning to inform improvement of the overall performance of the project. He/she will be the key liaison person between the Sightsavers, implementing partners and the management at the counties level.

The Lead Agronomist will report directly to the Agri services Operations Lead and functionality to the Head of Agri services and will be required to collaborate closely with the project consortium member organizations.

Responsibilities:

  • Overall oversight of all intervention activities at the county level in relation to agro-
  • entrepreneur development, farmers engagement and empowerment, crop production, aggregation, and marketing.
  • Drive day to day sorghum production activities including management of crop calendar, input procurement, planting, and crop management, harvesting and post – harvest handling
  • Responsible for mobilizing agro-entrepreneurs to offer farmer services including input access, advisory, mechanization, aggregation, finance, and markets
  • Establish high quality demonstration sites(plots) to be used in delivery of practical farmer trainings by the agro-entrepreneurs.
  • Initiate collaboration and local partnerships with the County and Sub – County Agricultural officers, input suppliers and other relevant service providers and identify leverage opportunities capable of adding value to the project
  • Monitor and provide timely periodic data to inform collation of reports from the accomplished field activities
