Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

At least an advanced University Degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary public health, epidemiology or relevant animal health related field. A PhD degree will be an added advantage.

General Experience

At least 7 years of proven experience in public and/or private sector animal health services at national, regional or international levels.
At least 7 years’ experience working on management of priority transboundary animal diseases in ECOWAS region;
At least 7 years’ working knowledge of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standards and the WTO SPS Agreement;
At least 7 years working knowledge of evaluation and assessment of various aspects of veterinary services using tools such as PVS, JEE etc.

Specific Experience

Experience in delivering capacity development interventions for veterinary services in key competency areas for prevention and control of transboundary animal diseases based on WOAH standards;

Assignment:

HIHEA seeks to promote diverse production, marketing, financing of agricultural value chains through member individual enterprises; and their aggregation producer organizations ( POs). The main aim of these short term assignment is to strengthen capacity of 30 –Producer Organization (POs); to enhance service delivery, access to markets and credit facilitation to at-least 16,000 smallholders individually and in their aggregation units. The assignment has 3 specific and interrelated objectives:
Enhance governance and entrepreneurial skills of target POs
Improve FOs Financial Literacy and Access to Finance
Improve business performance of target POs through planning, actualization of set plans, linkages
Create and enhance sustainable relationship with relevant stakeholders
Enhance staff capacity in capacity building of CBOs and Cooperatives
The producer organization specialist will be expected to have strong background experience in providing organizational development advice to producer organizations in commercialization. HIHEA is seeking to engage 3 short term consultants based in Machakos, Nyahururu and Nakuru.

Deliverables:

Review and Profile target POs (using CPI tool) to identify their capacity needs, and initiate an organizational development process to improve their governance and management capacities to become bankable and sustainable businesses.
Facilitate the POs to formulate strategy plans to guide their operations, identify demanded services by their member and undertake growth (joint selling, Buying and membership) outreach programs.
Work with POs management and HiH EA team to Set 3 – 6 month’s growth target milestones.
In collaboration with the Business Development Officers; Organize financial literacy programs with POs to help members understand how to manage their enterprise finances, appreciate use financial services including insurance and facilitate them to form viable SACCOs in their respective localities.
Guide in development fundable investment plans for financing by mainstream financial institutions.
Guide CBOs to public participation channels to ensure the member’s voice is heard by relevant stakeholder and decisions made in their locality have their considerations included.
Assist FOs management to conduct simple stakeholder analysis to help them understand how their activities can influence or be influenced by different stakeholders, signing of collaborative/joint agreements.
Promote gender inclusivity in the CBOs with a focus to joint decision making and participation of women in CBO leadership and activities.
Work with the program manager to collect and document lessons and best practices, organize sharing and learning platforms for FOs, and publish best practices.

Expected Outputs:

Growth in joint buying of inputs by POs members by 20% ( members and volumes) each season or every 6 months
Growth in joint selling of harvested produce by 30% ( members and volumes) each season or every 6 months
Promote diversification by producer organizations ( Minimum 2 value chains per PO)
Enhance proper governance and leadership structures within the POs
Signed collaborative agreements between POs and relevant stakeholders ; at least one agreement every season

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

At least a diploma in agribusiness, agricultural economics, development finance or any other related field.
At least 5 -years of working experience with Producer Organizations (Cooperatives and CBOs), farmer SACCOs or in agricultural financial institutions facilitating access to finance.
Experience with commonly used tools for value chain analysis and finance, business appraisal and business planning.
Experience in conducting stakeholder analysis with smallholder producer organizations.
Demonstrated experience in facilitating linkage of value chain businesses to the appropriate markets and market information sources.
Solid understanding of agriculture, small, medium and micro enterprises, economics, monitoring and evaluation and value chains.

Position: Lead Agronomist

Location: Primary location: Migori County with supervision roles in Homa Bay and Kisumu counties

About the position: The Lead Agronomist will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of all field activities for the project under the sorghum value chain. He/she will be responsible for on-boarding agro-entrepreneurs using organization’s business model. He/she will ensure that sorghum farmers joining the program receive quality extension services, access quality inputs and aggregate and market their produce every season. He/she will be responsible for mobilising appropriate resources to consolidate and report field monitoring data and gather useful learning to inform improvement of the overall performance of the project. He/she will be the key liaison person between the Sightsavers, implementing partners and the management at the counties level.

The Lead Agronomist will report directly to the Agri services Operations Lead and functionality to the Head of Agri services and will be required to collaborate closely with the project consortium member organizations.

Responsibilities:

Overall oversight of all intervention activities at the county level in relation to agro-
entrepreneur development, farmers engagement and empowerment, crop production, aggregation, and marketing.
Drive day to day sorghum production activities including management of crop calendar, input procurement, planting, and crop management, harvesting and post – harvest handling
Responsible for mobilizing agro-entrepreneurs to offer farmer services including input access, advisory, mechanization, aggregation, finance, and markets
Establish high quality demonstration sites(plots) to be used in delivery of practical farmer trainings by the agro-entrepreneurs.
Initiate collaboration and local partnerships with the County and Sub – County Agricultural officers, input suppliers and other relevant service providers and identify leverage opportunities capable of adding value to the project
Monitor and provide timely periodic data to inform collation of reports from the accomplished field activities
Responsible for ensuring that data reported is of high-quality standards of accuracy, reliability, credibility, and confidentiality and that it is in tandem with the services offered to the farmers.
Reporting program progress in timelines agreed upon primarily weekly, monthly, and quarterly but may also requested to prepare ad hoc reports
Work closely with BDS provider to facilitate commercialization of farming systems within the sorghum value chain with specific emphasis to PWDs,
Organize peer learning sessions and provide feedback on progress of implementation

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications and Key Competencies.

Degree in either of the following disciplines; Agriculture, Agriculture Education and

Extension, Agribusiness management.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in related commercialized agricultural value chain either in the private, rural or community development organizations.
Demonstrated experience in data collection and reporting for similar programs
Experience working with production groups, cooperatives or contracted farmers will be preferred
Ability to ride a motorcycle with at-least 2-year experience and a valid riding license.
