Position: Vegetable Business Officer 

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

About the Position: To establish vegetable aggregation centers in several counties in liaison with the implementing partners in the Veggies 4 Planet & People (V4P&P) project, government partners, and the private sector, and facilitate a sustainable and replicable aggregation center business model.

Responsibilities: 

  • Together with project implementing partners and stakeholders, and under the guidance of the principal investigator, develop feasibility studies and business plans for the establishment and operation of pilot vegetable aggregation centers in 3 different counties in Kenya, based on the concept note that has been developed by V4P&P  
  • Quantify project revenue streams based on the sale of produce, logistics, business development services, storage, value addition, member fees, and other fees  
  • Develop a cost structure for the aggregation centers.  
  • Liaise with the anticipated clients of the aggregation centers, such as vegetable producers, Agro-input providers, service providers, transporters, traders, and buyers, derived from existing vegetable business networks (VBNs) in the project.  
  • In liaison with the project communication officer, media, other stakeholders, and field days, promote the values of the aggregation centers and their products among consumers and the wider community.  
  • Promote accountability, transparency, and good leadership.  
  • Monitor and document the operation of aggregation centers for the purpose of learning, sharing lessons with stakeholders and reporting.  
  • Manage other activities: identification and acquisition of land, design of aggregation center, the building of infrastructure, consultative meetings with stakeholders, setting up a management committee for each center, and capacity building of management committees
  •  Liaise with the Veggies 4P&P project to coordinate complementary activities.
  •  Perform any other duties assigned by the Kenya Country Director. 

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  •  Master’s or bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, agribusiness, or a related field.
  •  Minimum of three years’ experience in agricultural value chains, facilitating upstream and downstream
  • linkages
  •  Proven experience in building the capacity of agricultural enterprises.
  •  Proven experience in liaising with public and private partners, and linking smallholder farmers to
  • markets, particularly for perishable products.
  •  Familiarity with circular economy
  •  Experience working in an international organization will be an advantage.

Position: Senior Research Officer I

About the position: The Research Officer will manage research activities within the Animal Health Theme. He/she will assist in overseeing and designing advanced experiments. Position: Marine Program Officer – Western Indian Ocean

The Feed and Fodder Business Development Expert within the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems Project will work with the Animal Production, Natural Resource Management and Resilience Expert to execute the action: Viable business models, Strategic Partnerships, Catalytic Interventions for Coordinated Action Supported to Attract Enhanced Investment for Short Term Solutions to Feed and Fodder Shortages.

Responsibilities:

Main Functions

  • The position of the Feed and Fodder Business Development Expert will support delivery of the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems Project through coordination and execution of the activities on Viable business models, Strategic Partnerships, Catalytic Interventions for Coordinated Action Supported to Attract Enhanced Investment for Short Term Solutions to Feed and Fodder Shortages. This will include the coordination of actors, selection and application of viable business models, and formation of strategic alliances to steer the growth of feed and fodder sectors in the selected countries. This position will support assessment of impact of crisis on the animal feed and fodder sector, and identification viable business models, and coordination of multi-stakeholder efforts to enhance access to feed and fodder in the implementing countries. The Feed and Fodder Business Development Expert will work closely with AU-IBAR Gender Expert to develop and implement Gender-Smart Investment strategies and models.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Develop and support the implementation of selected business models and strategies to address feed and fodder shortages.
  • Coordinate multi-stakeholder actions and processes towards feed and fodder production and increased investment.
  • Facilitate linkages between supply-chain actors including public and private sectors, and financial institutions, and producer organizations.
  • Support development of sector policies aimed at creating an enabling environment for feed and fodder solutions.
  • Support documentation, knowledge management and adoption of best practices and viable models across the implementing countries

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of post-graduate degree (Master’s degree) in Agri-business or Business Administration, or related degree. A PhD will be considered as an added advantage.

Relevant Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of sector-level engagement in the feed and fodder sub-sector.

  • Experience in working for or with financial institutions, public, private and development sectors will be an added advantage.
