Position: Consultancy for Home gardening, Parma Gardening and Climate Smart Agriculture

About the position: The consultant will design and facilitate the training of 300 participants in Kakuma and Nairobi using proven approaches to smart and permagarden food production techniques, using small spaces and scarce water for maximum yield despite the climatic condition. This includes guiding CBOs engaging in poultry rearing on the suitable breeds and best practices for poultry management. The consultant will guide on the appropriate input tools, seeds, and seedlings to use within the Nairobi and Kakuma context. It’s anticipated that this work will commence on March 1, 2023 through to July 2023.

 

Responsibilities: 

The specific objectives are to:

  • Provide field and practical training to 300 participants and support them in the establishment of home gardens and livestock rearing.
  • Map out potential input suppliers and traders for surplus production and facilitate a network meeting to promote trade.
  • Provide training materials for participants to sustain their knowledge after the training.
  • Train Trainer of Trainers from the community to support in the sustainability of the established gardens.

Deliverables:

  • Provide an inception report, and detailed work plan to include, training & coaching methods and approaches.
  • Provide onsite training to 300 participants in Kakuma, Kalobeyei and various locations in Nairobi and its environs.
  • Guide in the establishment of home gardens, with several demonstration plots in the various field locations Kakuma and Nairobi (Specific sites to be decided together with the Project Assistants.
  • Provide Trainer of trainers training to CBO on home gardening techniques, and poultry rearing.
  • To develop, customize and prepare a practical training manual for follow-up and reference by clients (hard and soft copies).
  • Map out local input suppliers, and guide on the appropriate inputs needed for each context for the CBOs to purchase.
  • Provide post-establishment monitoring report and final report of the training within 30 days of completion of the assignment.

 

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in Agriculture related studies or any other relevant and equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Vast experience planning, designing and establishing perma/ home gardens in urban and arid lands, as well as refugee/displacement settings with space/land constraints.
  • Good and proven trainers with excellent training skills and methodologies suitable for adult learning.
  • Excellent project management skills including the demonstrated ability to conduct assessments, analysis, training, monitoring, and reporting within set deadlines.
  • Ability to use a participatory, appreciative, strengths-based approach that builds on existing capacities / experiences, and custom learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, with limited supervision.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse and marginalized populations in a respectful, non-judgmental, and ethically sound manner.
  • Familiarity with NGO context.
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Kiswahili. A French-speaking member of the team will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead provision of training, technical support, and advice on monitoring in PCAs to partners in ZSL and non-ZSL supported sites, focusing on common monitoring methods, including but not limited to the SMART Approach.

Additional requirements

 

Essential

  • The postholder will be required to travel within Kenya on a regular basis, including to field sites, such as the Tsavo Conservation Area, and Nairobi. There may be opportunities to travel to partner sites in countries around the world, ZSL’s UK base, and conferences and workshops as required.
  • The postholder will generally work normal office hours when not delivering training but there will sometimes be a requirement to work out-of-office hours or over weekends, and to travel over weekends.

Position: ILRI Internship

About the position: Sirikwa Dairies is a Farmers’ owned Cooperative society is based in in Uasin Gishu County with extended membership and operations in Kakamega County. The dairy cooperative therefore wishes to engage the services of Youth students on attachment to assist them in their operations as they learn.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Recommending to farmers on the best dairy cow breed.
  • Advising farmers on good dairy animal management including feeding formulation.
  • Conducting farmers trainings on extension basis
  • Conduct Animal health check ups
  • Carry out dairy cow vaccination under close supervision
  • Conduct Artificial Insemination and Vaccination services for member farmers under the supervision of the Vet Doctor
  • Any other duty that will be assigned by the supervisor.

 

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  • Certificate /Diploma in Dairy production, Animal health or General Agriculture.
  • Thorough knowledge of Dairy cow diseases
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out animal vaccination and Artificial Insemination (AI) Services.
  • Has interest in Milk value addition/processing
  • Should be preferably from Uasin Gishu or Kakamega Counties
  • Understanding and ability to communicate in the local languages (Luhya /Kalenjin) a plus

Position: County Chief Officers – Agriculture, Irrigation and Food Security

 

Location: Lamu County

Responsibilities: 

  • The County Chief Officer shall be the Accounting and Authorized Officer in a specific County Department in a respect of exercise of delegated power;
  • The County Chief Officer shall be Authorized Officer in the County Department and shall be the responsible to the respective County Executive Committee Member for the administration of the County Department as provided under Section 46 of the County Governments Act, 2012;
  • Formulation and implementation of effective programs to attain Vision 2030 and Sector Goals;
  • Development and implementation of Strategic Plans and Sector Development Plans;
  • Implementation of Policies and Regulations;
  • Providing Strategic policy direction for effective service delivery;
  • Ensuring compliance with the National Values and Principles of good governance as outlined in Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution of Kenya; and
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Governor from time to time

 

Education/ Work Experience Requirements:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen;
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a university recognized in Kenya;
  • Ten (10) years general experience of which five (5) years’ experience in managerial position in Public or Private Sector;
  • Be conversant with the Constitution of Kenya and all the devolution laws;
  • Be a strategic thinker and result oriented;
  • Demonstrate understanding of County Development objectives and Vision 2030;
  • Have good communication, organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Have capacity to work under pressure to meet timelines;
  • Have capacity to work in a multi – ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to the values and principles as outlined in article 10 and 232 of the Constitution of Kenya; and
  • Be computer literate.
