Through an online marketplace, a chicken farmer has expanded his market, increasing his stagnated chick sales by half, and getting hungry clients for his eggs and adult chicken.

After joining Tappi in August this year, Evans Okongo the founder of Chickworld Poultry Farm sold 5,500 chicks each at Sh110 in November, 2,500 more than he had ever sold. He also got new customers for 30 live and slaughtered chicken and six kienyeji egg trays.

The improved kienyeji chicken farmer based in Juja Town who got an order of 1,000 chicks through the Tappi app mid-converstion when we visited him, explained that having a ready market is the biggest question day-old chick sellers have. “Every week a chick stays on the farm it eats 10 extra extra grams of feed which is about 50 extra shillings. It further eats into my pockets by taking increasingly larger amounts of water and also requires vaccination,” he said.

Founded in 2022, Tappi provides a platform for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to get discovered and connect with new clients growing their businesses. They do this by creating a webpage for the business, 250 bulk SMS marketing credits, monthly text marketing through 50 SMS and WhatsApp reviews, and placing ads. All this costs a business Sh1,350 every month.

Tappi which has had more than 150,000 consumers who have transacted over Sh389 million since its inception, was among the first apps to be included on the M-PESA For Business App— a virtual storefront for businesses– in October this year and that is where Evans first learned of it. “I was scrolling through my Mpesa app and came across Tappi in the marketing section. I was on the lookout for ways of accessing a new market because at the time it felt like I had exhausted my market which was mainly from repeat customers, the farmers around me, and a couple of new clients I got from creating social media content, especially on Facebook, to sell my chicks,” he highlighted.

Curious to see if this new and unconventional marketing channel would bring in any extra sales he first searched for Tappi and the reviews of people who had used it online. Satisfied that they had largely good things to say about it he registered and paid the Sh1,350 fee.

The young farmer put up pictures of kienyeji egg trays he was selling and within a day he had gotten an order to deliver one tray which sells for Sh750 to Nairobi. “I googled chickworld on my phone and could see the new Chickworld Poultry farm Tappi website had already been created and was the first mention of Chickworld on Google,” he said.

Encouraged by his sale, Evans who had paid for another marketing service that had left him disappointed, posted everything he was selling. These included chicken and duck chicks, live and slaughtered chicken, feeding trays, and drinkers.

In the next month of September, he sold 300 chicks through Tappi.

From the Tappi platform buyers can tap on whatever they are buying, pick the quantities, and put it in a cart. When they click to order, they are taken to the seller’s Whatsapp account. A seller like Evans also gets a notification on their phone through the Tappi app that they have a client looking to be served.

Potential customers can also reach him directly through a mobile phone number at the front of his Chickworld Tappi webpage.

Evans who has 19 reviews on his page, all five stars, urges other farmers to consider adding Tappi to their marketing arsenal “As long as you give good customer service, get good reviews, I’d say it’s a sure way to bump up your sales,” he said.
