Solar milk pasteurizer improves smallholder farmer profits
3 min read
Using a solar milk pasÂteurÂizer, smallÂholder farmÂers seekÂing to minÂimÂize milk losses along the marÂketÂing chain esÂpeÂcially in the arid and semi-arid lands has been deÂveloped by the Kenya AgÂriÂculÂtural and LiveÂstock ReÂsearch OrÂganÂizÂaÂtion. Â The new techÂnoÂlogy will help milk farmÂers and busiÂness vendors proÂlong the shelf life of milk and hence imÂprove marÂket- abilÂity and genÂerÂate more inÂcome.
Milk marÂketÂing is an imÂportÂant inÂcome earnÂing opÂporÂtunÂity for people in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) of Kenya. For a long time, farmÂers have been using limÂited fireÂwood to boil the milk hence plaÂcing inÂtense presÂsure on the forests and desÂtroyÂing the enÂvirÂonÂment.

The solar milk pasÂteurÂizer conÂsists of a flat-plate water heatÂing solar colÂlector and a stainÂless steel cylÂindrical milk conÂtainer. Water in the solar colÂlector is dirÂectly heated by the sun and the hot water proÂduced used for pasÂteurÂizÂing milk.
AcÂcordÂing to Marsabit KALRO ofÂficer F.Wayua, the abundÂant solar enÂergy in ASALs can be used to pasÂteurÂize milk. A simple solar milk pasÂteurÂizer can be made locÂally with the aid of jua kali arÂtisÂans. The maÂterÂiÂals reÂquired for fabÂricÂaÂtion inÂclude a flat plate solar colÂlector, a stainÂless steel cylÂindrical tank, conÂnectÂing pipes& valves and inÂsuÂlatÂing maÂterÂiÂals (fiber glass, cotÂton, wool and saw dust). The maÂterÂiÂals can be obÂtained from natÂive hardÂware shops close to the farmÂers’ resÂidÂence.

After asÂsemÂbling and the device is ready for use, it is adÂvisÂable to tilt the solar colÂlector at 10-15° from the hoÂriÂzontal, faÂcing the equator. EnÂsure you have good qualÂity milk to be pasÂteurÂized and a piece of clean sterile (boiled) cotÂton cloth.

ProÂcedÂure for Milk PasÂteurÂizÂaÂtion
- PasÂteurÂizÂaÂtion should be done between 10 am and 4 pm when there is adÂequate solar raÂdiÂation
- Fill the sysÂtem with water in the mornÂing
- Sieve milk using the cotÂton cloth
- Pour the sieved milk in the milk conÂtainer
- Water in the solar colÂlector is dirÂectly heated by the sun
- The hot water proÂduced is used for pasÂteurÂizÂing milk in the milk conÂtainer
- CirÂcuÂlaÂtion of hot water from the colÂlector to the jackÂeted milk conÂtainer conÂtinÂues as long as the sun is shinÂing
- Let the milk heat to 63°C and hold for 30 minutes or 85°C (when it starts to foam) and hold for 5 seconds.
The device is reÂcomÂmenÂded for proÂduÂcers and milk traders in arid pasÂtoral areas as they have limÂited acÂcess to grid elecÂtriÂcity but have plenty of solar raÂdiÂation. Milk PasÂteurÂizÂaÂtion makes milk safe for human conÂsumpÂtion.
