Worn mosquito nets help recent nursery pest attacks

ImĀmeĀdiĀate layĀing a of a net over a nursĀery bed can preĀvent pest which atĀtack seedĀlings as the inĀtuders search for cell sap, leaves or stems to feed on.

Many a time, seedĀlings die folĀlowĀing heavy inĀfestĀaĀtion, which also puts them at risk of conĀtractĀing disĀeases transĀmitĀted by pests like inĀsects.

A new net or reĀpaired one would keep away grasshopĀpers and snails that feed on the leaves of the young plants. CaterĀpilĀlars atĀtack leaves and stems of toĀmaĀtoes, cabĀbage, chilly, among othĀers.

SimĀilĀarly, nets would also keep off moths, which lay eggs on the seedĀling at night. The eggs later hatch into larĀvae beĀfore cutĀting the stems, or feed on the leaves.

White flies cause massive damĀage on young plants too. They suck the cell sap beĀsides transĀmitĀting viral disĀeases. NotĀably, AcĀcess AgĀriĀculĀture, an agĀriĀculĀtural reĀsearch inĀstiĀtuĀtion, says the flies die after the first apĀplicĀaĀtion of pestiĀcide. By the second and subĀsequent apĀplicĀaĀtion, the fly could have creĀated resĀistĀance against the pestiĀcide.

That means the pestiĀcide will go to waste beĀsides enĀdanĀgerĀing huĀmans and the enĀvirĀonĀment beĀcause of their chemĀical comĀponĀents.

LayĀing a shield does not reĀquire much exĀpertĀise. With a locĀally availĀable net a farmer can pin small posts around the nursĀery bed and lay strong sticks from one end to the other to elĀevĀate the net to about one mitre.

ApĀproxĀimĀately one mitre of the maĀterĀial is covered by soil around the bed to preĀvent entry of pest.

WaĀterĀing can be done dirĀectly from outĀside the shield. It should be reĀmoved only when the seedĀlings are ready to be transĀplanted.
