Worn mosquito nets help recent nursery pest attacks

ImÂmeÂdiÂate layÂing a of a net over a nursÂery bed can preÂvent pest which atÂtack seedÂlings as the inÂtuders search for cell sap, leaves or stems to feed on.
Many a time, seedÂlings die folÂlowÂing heavy inÂfestÂaÂtion, which also puts them at risk of conÂtractÂing disÂeases transÂmitÂted by pests like inÂsects.
A new net or reÂpaired one would keep away grasshopÂpers and snails that feed on the leaves of the young plants. CaterÂpilÂlars atÂtack leaves and stems of toÂmaÂtoes, cabÂbage, chilly, among othÂers.
SimÂilÂarly, nets would also keep off moths, which lay eggs on the seedÂling at night. The eggs later hatch into larÂvae beÂfore cutÂting the stems, or feed on the leaves.
White flies cause massive damÂage on young plants too. They suck the cell sap beÂsides transÂmitÂting viral disÂeases. NotÂably, AcÂcess AgÂriÂculÂture, an agÂriÂculÂtural reÂsearch inÂstiÂtuÂtion, says the flies die after the first apÂplicÂaÂtion of pestiÂcide. By the second and subÂsequent apÂplicÂaÂtion, the fly could have creÂated resÂistÂance against the pestiÂcide.

That means the pestiÂcide will go to waste beÂsides enÂdanÂgerÂing huÂmans and the enÂvirÂonÂment beÂcause of their chemÂical comÂponÂents.
LayÂing a shield does not reÂquire much exÂpertÂise. With a locÂally availÂable net a farmer can pin small posts around the nursÂery bed and lay strong sticks from one end to the other to elÂevÂate the net to about one mitre.
ApÂproxÂimÂately one mitre of the maÂterÂial is covered by soil around the bed to preÂvent entry of pest.
WaÂterÂing can be done dirÂectly from outÂside the shield. It should be reÂmoved only when the seedÂlings are ready to be transÂplanted.
