CatĀfish culĀture in conĀcrete greenĀhouse ponds is a new inĀnovĀatĀive alĀternĀatĀive to use of outĀdoor pond liners that helps to curb canĀniĀbalĀism which eats into up to 42 per cent of the profits of catĀfish farmĀers. The warm weather inĀside the greenĀhouses also enĀcourĀages faster growth of the fish. ConĀcrete ponds are also more durĀable, lastĀing for over 20 years if made from qualĀity maĀterĀial.

AnĀthony Mwangi, the proĀpriĀetor of Oasis Aquafish Farm in Thika exĀplains that one of the major chalĀlenges faced by catĀfish farmĀers in Kenya is the canĀniĀbalĀistic nature of the speĀcies. AcĀcordĀing to a study of the efĀfects of catĀfish gradĀing in Kenya done at Mwea Aquafish Farm LimĀited by theĀ Journal of AquaculĀture, FishĀerĀies & Fish SciĀence: fish graded every two weeks had a 7.5 per cent canĀniĀbalĀism morĀtalĀity rate comĀpared to 42.4 per cent in fish that were not graded and 18.9 perĀcent for fish graded every four weeks. Size variĀation was also sigĀniĀficĀantly afĀfected by gradĀing freĀquency with fish graded every two weeks gainĀing and reĀtainĀing weigh quicker folĀlowed by those graded every four weeks and fiĀnally those with no gradĀing treatĀment being the lowĀest.

ConĀcrete greenĀhouse ponds measĀure just 3 x 4 meters; this makes manĀageĀment easier for the farmer as they are able to preĀvent canĀniĀbalĀism in their stock by regĀuĀlarly sortĀing the shootĀers (fast maĀturĀers) and reĀmovĀing them beĀfore autoĀmatĀicĀally reĀfilling the pond with water. ConĀcrete ponds are reĀcomĀmenĀded to house hardy fish speĀcies like catĀfish, which can surĀvive at a high stockĀing densĀity. With a stockĀing rate of 100 fish per square meter, the pond can fit 1000 fish. UtilĀising best manĀageĀment pracĀtices, a farmer can harĀvest up to one tonne of fish in 9 months from the 3*4 metre pond.

From Mwangi’s exĀperĀiĀence, due to the water in the pond avĀerĀaging a conĀstant 35°C, fish reared in conĀcrete greenĀhouses reach one kiloĀgram (plate size) faster than those stocked in outĀdoor ponds. Pond liners also start to fray and need reĀplaĀcing after three to four years while conĀcrete ponds last for over 20 years without needĀing much refur

DeĀpendĀing on the availĀabĀilĀity of maĀterĀiĀals used in its conĀstrucĀtion, a conĀcrete 12 square meter greenĀhouse costs between Sh 50,000 and 80,000.
