Rita Nangira, a mixed farmer at Mureko, KakaĀmega County has imĀproved plant growth by over 30 per cent using efĀfectĀive miĀcroorĀganĀisms (EM) and efĀfectĀive miĀcroorĀganĀism acĀtivĀated soluĀtion (EMAS). EM is afĀfordĀable to farmĀers with one liter of costĀing just Sh350-375 in agrovets and capĀable of being utilĀised on 30 hecĀtares of farmĀland. EMAS is even cheaper as a liter of EM1 can be mulĀtiĀplied into 20 liters.
āI have been using EMAS for six months now after being inĀtroĀduced to it by a neighĀbor farmer and beĀcomĀing betĀter conĀversĀant with its forĀmuĀlaĀtion from my own reĀsearch. It has enĀhanced the perĀformĀance of ferĀtilĀiser I apply while also supĀpressĀing soil-borne disĀeases which have alĀmost halved my apĀplicĀaĀtion of pestiĀcides,ā says the 38-year-old who grows horĀtiĀculĀtural proĀduce and fruits on her 4.5-acre farm.
EfĀfectĀive miĀcroorĀganĀisms techĀnoĀlogy (EM) was deĀveloped in Japan by agĀriĀculĀture sciĀentĀist at the UniĀversity of RyĀukyus and uses safe and huĀman-friendly miĀcroorĀganĀisms. It is now in use in over 140 counĀtries in the world to supĀpleĀment growĀing media with beĀneĀfiĀcial miĀcroorĀganĀisms that stimĀuĀlate comĀpostĀing, supĀpress harmĀful miĀcrobes and imĀprove the reĀsponse of ferĀtilĀiser as well as restorĀing the qualĀity of water.

EM is a mixed-culĀture soluĀtion of efĀfectĀive miĀcrobes that works to get natĀural proĀcesses to funcĀtion more efĀfectĀively by stimĀuĀlatĀing bioĀloĀgical activĀity in the soil and plant. EM also serves as a miĀcroĀbial or soil inĀocuĀlantāagĀriĀculĀtural amendĀments that use miĀcrobes to proĀmote plant health. It is yelĀlow to brown in color with a sweet-sour ferĀmenĀted smell and has a PH value of 4 and below.
EfĀfectĀive miĀcroorĀganĀism acĀtivĀated soluĀtion (EMAS) is an acĀtivĀated EM soluĀtion forĀmuĀlated to trigĀger and mulĀtiply the beĀneĀfiĀcial miĀcrobes in EM1 which exĀists in a stagĀnant state.. It is inĀtuĀitĀiveāeasy to unĀderĀstand and use as well as able to heal the soil and enĀvirĀonĀment orĀganĀicĀally.
āTo make EMAS which is anĀaerĀobicĀally ferĀmenĀted (without air) I use a clean plastic conĀtainer that is tightly covered and stored in a cool dry place away from dirĀect sunĀlight with an ideal temĀperĀatĀure range of 20-35°C. To make one liter of EMASS it is reĀcomĀmenĀded you use 90 per cent, 900 milĀliĀliters of unĀchlorĀinĀated water (chlorĀinĀated water kills both harmĀful and beĀneĀfiĀcial bacĀteria); five perĀcent, 50ml of EM1 (use genuĀine EM1 sourced from reĀliĀable disĀtribĀutĀors) and anĀother five perĀcent, 50ml of clean molasses. My EMAS mixĀture is usuĀally ferĀmenĀted after five days to one week; if temĀperĀatĀures are low you will need extra days for it to āripenā. I open the lead to my soluĀtion at least once a day to reĀlease gas that forms 2-3 days after mixĀing. On day seven once ferĀmentĀaĀtion is comĀplete there will be no gas. The mixĀture is usuĀally dark to light brown and gives off a sweet-sour smell with no odor,ā exĀplains Rita.

The miĀcroĀbial activĀity in EMAS is higher within the first month and disĀsipĀates graduĀally after that. EMAS is apĀplied as 10m (one taĀbleĀspoon) in one liter of water and is sprayed dirĀectly on leaves once or twice a week. The best time for apĀplicĀaĀtion is between 5 am-9 am in the mornĀing or in the afĀterĀnoon between 3 pm-6 pm. This is the ideal sprayĀing time plant stoĀmata is openĀing up and ready to abĀsorb availĀable miĀcrobes. EMAS soluĀtion can also be dirĀectly apĀplied to the soil. Mixed in with water at 10ml of EMAS for a liter the mix can also be used as a proĀbiĀotic to bolĀster the imĀmune sysĀtems of anĀimĀals such as chickĀens, pigs and rabĀbits. Once it is mixed with water, EMAS, esĀpeĀcially if fed to anĀimĀals should be used within 24 hours to avoid conĀtamĀinĀaĀtion.
The main miĀcrobes present in EM1 are lactic acid bacĀteria, yeast and phoĀtoĀtrophic bacĀteria. Lactic acid bacĀteria deĀcomĀpose orĀganic matĀter by ferĀmentĀaĀtion and acts as a barĀrier that keeps off harmĀful miĀcrobes by lowerĀing PH inĀhibĀitĀing the growth of pathoĀgens. Yeast for its part deĀcomĀposes orĀganic matĀter through ferĀmentĀaĀtion and proĀduces bioĀactĀive subĀstances that are conĀverĀted into plant food. Yeast also imĀproves the imĀmune sysĀtems of anĀimĀals and plants. PhoĀtoĀtropic bacĀteria neutĀralĀises punĀgent smell by deĀcomĀposĀing harmĀful gases such as amĀmoĀnia and hyĀdroĀgen sulfĀide chanĀging them into odorĀless gases.
