1 min readBy Stephen Kaindo
Tuta absoluta, also known as the tomato leaf miner, is a devastating pest that has caused massive losses for farmers across Africa. First detected in Kenya in 2014, it quickly spread nationwide, threating tomato production with yield losses of up to 100%.
We report from Alex Nderitu, a tomato farmer from Murang’a County, who has successfully adopted pheromone traps to fight Tuta absoluta. By switching from synthetic pesticides to traps, Alex has reduced his pest control cost by 70% while protecting his crops from leaf mining, fruit tunneling, and internal damage.
