Qualifications/special skills

  • A first level degree in agronomy, agricultural or natural resource economics, environmental economics, resource economics, political sciences, international studies and development, environmental sciences, or a related field is required. An advanced level degree in related fields would be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with development, agricultural, environmental and sustainability policy is required.
  • Experience in the areas of biodiversity monitoring, environmental accounting, and collaboration with government agencies, is required.
  • Specialized expertise in bioeconomy, land use change policies, trade policies and value chains, agricultural production and assessment of externalities (i.e. water pollution, soil degradation), ecosystem service valuation, agricultural economics, health and human capital assessment, social capital and landscape governance assessment is desired.

Position: Advocacy Officer

Farming Systems Kenya (FSK) wishes trecruit a born again Christian, competent, self- motivated, qualified and passionate Advocacy officer whwill be responsible for coordinating the Animal welfare programs and taking the lead in curbing the illegal donkey bush slaughter and donkey hide trade. The officer will be based in FSK Narok Office and will report directly tthe Senior Programs Manager.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Implement donkey advocacy and welfare program activities in FSK donkey welfare target areas
  • Engage with government institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders tdeepen their understanding of donkey welfare issues and encourage the integration of equine welfare considerations into development agendas.
  • Work closely with media traise awareness about animal welfare and the impact of the donkey hide trade and illegal donkey bush slaughter on communities.
  • Plan and execute the activities as per the work plan in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Provide advice and/or training on animal welfare ethics tthe donkey owners & users and the public.
  • Identify strategic opportunities, forums, and platforms tpresent policy-relevant information, including professional presentations, media articles, and research papers.
  • Represent FSK in advocacy-related events, presenting well-researched data, policy papers, and materials tinfluence decision-making.
  • Identify, establish new and strengthen the existing multi-stakeholder platforms ttackle illegal donkey slaughter.
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with partners tenhance collaboration on animal welfare and donkey rescue efforts.
  • Participate and collaborate on campaigns related tveterinary care and social development within the communities.
  • Work collaboratively with government institutions and other actors taddress emerging equine welfare concerns, including donkey skin trade and other threats
  • Work closely with communities tgather intelligence on illegal donkey movement and slaughter.
  • Provide accurate progress reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual) within required timeframes.
  • Document all advocacy work implemented by FSK, adhering tdonor requirements.
  • Provide regular updates on the donkey welfare project (monthly, quarterly, and annual reports).
  • Undertake fundraising activities and develop proposals for the target counties.
  • Work closely with veterinary departments tensure compliance with the ban on donkey slaughter and trade in hides and skins.
  • Perform any other duty assigned tyou by the supervisor

Knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, animal science, political science, international relations, public relations, public policy or any other related discipline.
  • Two years’ field-based experience in advocacy work.
  • Possess strong communication skills.
  • Competencies in advocacy and lobbying.
  • Experience in project planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrate partnership-building, networking, collaboration and representations skills.
  • Successful candidate should be able tpersuade, motivate and compel support for key ideas and
  • initiatives by delivering clear well- structured presentations to stakeholders.
  • Ability tride a motorbike will be an added advantage.
