Sex trap tame devastating African armyworm

The African armyworm, scientifically known as Spodoptera exempta, is a particularly devastating pest. An early warnĀ­ing sysĀ­tem using traps that fake the smell of matĀ­ing feĀ­male moths has deĀ­livered a breakĀ­through in counĀ­terĀ­ing the spread of the armyĀ­worm, which can move into an area and devĀ­astĀ­ate enĀ­tire crops.

The over 2 milĀ­lion farmĀ­ers in Kenya and TanĀ­zania who toĀ­gether grow over 7 milĀ­lion hecĀ­tares of cerĀ­eal, mainly maize, now say cases of armyĀ­worm inĀ­vaĀ­sion have dwindled greatly thanks to the early deĀ­tecĀ­tion under a proĀ­ject deĀ­veloped by the Centre for AgĀ­riĀ­culĀ­ture and BiosĀ­ciences InĀ­terĀ­naĀ­tional (CABI).

The African armyĀ­worm, sciĀ­enĀ­tificĀ­ally known as SpodĀ­opĀ­tera exĀ­empta, is a parĀ­ticĀ­uĀ­larly devĀ­astĀ­atĀ­ing pest. Large numĀ­bers of the voĀ­raĀ­cious black caterĀ­pilĀ­lars apĀ­pear sudĀ­denly, leavĀ­ing crops and pasĀ­ture devĀ­astĀ­ated in their wake. Once the food has been exĀ­hausted in one area, they miĀ­grate to their next desĀ­tinĀ­aĀ­tion. With outĀ­breaks are difĀ­fiĀ­cult to preĀ­dict, they catch farmĀ­ers unĀ­aware and unĀ­preĀ­pared. If unĀ­conĀ­trolled, they can cause total crop loss, with milĀ­lions of hecĀ­tares afĀ­fected in bad years.

But unĀ­derĀ­standĀ­ing the inĀ­sect has asĀ­sisted sciĀ­entĀ­ists in preĀ­dictĀ­ing which areas might exĀ­perĀ­iĀ­ence outĀ­breaks, some two weeks ahead of acĀ­tual inĀ­vaĀ­sions. However, while such foreĀ­casts are useĀ­ful for naĀ­tional planĀ­ning, they are of little or no value to inĀ­diĀ­vidual farmĀ­ers. GovĀ­ernĀ­ments often have inĀ­sufĀ­fiĀ­cient caĀ­paĀ­city for timely conĀ­trol, with inĀ­sectĀ­icides conĀ­tinuĀ­ously being ruled out due to their proĀ­hibĀ­itĀ­ive cost and damĀ­age to the enĀ­virĀ­onĀ­ment.

The proĀ­ject has thereĀ­fore put in place local reĀ­acĀ­tion and monĀ­itĀ­orĀ­ing sysĀ­tems.

Early deĀ­tecĀ­tion is being achieved using factĀ­ory enĀ­hanced feĀ­male horĀ­mones, comĀ­monly known as pherĀ­omones, which act as a trap that dupes the male of the presĀ­ence of a feĀ­male ready to mate. A pherĀ­omone is a bioĀ­loĀ­gical chemĀ­ical secreted by feĀ­male inĀ­sects or even mamĀ­mals that trigĀ­gers the atĀ­tracĀ­tion of a male to a feĀ­male.

In the armyĀ­worm it is the basic inĀ­dicĀ­ator used by male moths to identify feĀ­male moths for matĀ­ing with docĀ­uĀ­mented evidĀ­ence showĀ­ing that male armyĀ­worm moths are able to deĀ­tect the scent of the pherĀ­omone from a raĀ­dius of 10 km, deĀ­pendĀ­ing on wind dirĀ­ecĀ­tion.

The pherĀ­omone trap also conĀ­tains an inĀ­sectĀ­icide and once inĀ­side the trap the moths die. The farmĀ­ers then count the dead ones after every week.

AcĀ­cordĀ­ing to sciĀ­entĀ­ists, more than 30 catches of the moths in a week is a clear warnĀ­ing of a posĀ­sible inĀ­vaĀ­sion of armyĀ­worms. When this hapĀ­pens, an alert is isĀ­sued by word of mouth in schools, chiefs’ meetĀ­ings, churches and on comĀ­munity radio.

The proĀ­ject, which was piĀ­loted in TanĀ­zania sevĀ­eral years ago and evenĀ­tuĀ­ally scaled up in other counĀ­tries, has also inĀ­volved the trainĀ­ing of farmĀ­ers who in turn train othĀ­ers within the vilĀ­lage.

IniĀ­tially, the plan was to train at least 200 vilĀ­lages, but the proĀ­ject has exĀ­ceeded exĀ­pectĀ­aĀ­tion with Malawi and TanĀ­zania alone exĀ­ceedĀ­ing the tarĀ­get. AcĀ­cordĀ­ing to Jon Knight, an ecoĀ­nomĀ­ist from the ImĀ­perĀ­ial ColĀ­lege of LonĀ­don who has been among the people inĀ­volved in the venĀ­ture, the foreĀ­castĀ­ing has been highly efĀ­fectĀ­ive given the low costs inĀ­volved.

The iniĀ­tial cost of trainĀ­ing each vilĀ­lage was just $233 dolĀ­lars with an adĀ­diĀ­tional $4 being used to buy the trap which lasts for up to ten years and the pherĀ­omone costĀ­ing $2 a year. However, the cost has been furĀ­ther reĀ­duced through more cost efĀ­fectĀ­ive trainĀ­ing, and has deĀ­livered added beĀ­neĀ­fits in teachĀ­ing reĀ­searchĀ­ers how best to enĀ­gage with local farmĀ­ers.

The second phase of the proĀ­ject inĀ­volves the esĀ­tabĀ­lishĀ­ment and exĀ­panĀ­sion of a virus proĀ­ducĀ­tion sysĀ­tem in TanĀ­zania to creĀ­ate a natĀ­ural pestiĀ­cide called SpexNPV to fight the worm. SciĀ­entĀ­ists have tested the virus, as well as locĀ­ally-grown neem, and shown that both kill the worm.

Over half of farmĀ­ers in TanĀ­zania have neem trees, and can use both leaves and berĀ­ries to fight the worm. But it takes a lot of leaves to genĀ­erĀ­ate a pestiĀ­cide setĀ­ting up probĀ­lems of bulk. However, the virus is much less bulky, and is being made so that it is held in a light clay soluĀ­tion that is then dried ready for reĀ­hydĀ­ratĀ­ing and sprayĀ­ing.

The techĀ­noĀ­logy to proĀ­duce the virus locĀ­ally has been brought in from Brazil and will iniĀ­tially creĀ­ate enough virus to treat around 10,000 ha a year, and later to meet the reĀ­gional need of 100,000 ha a year. The proĀ­ject is being funĀ­ded through the ReĀ­search into Use ProĀ­gramme (RUI) funĀ­ded by the UK DeĀ­partĀ­ment for InĀ­terĀ­naĀ­tional DeĀ­velĀ­opĀ­ment (DFID)

The double breakĀ­through of an early warnĀ­ing sysĀ­tem and natĀ­ural pestiĀ­cides come at a time when the govĀ­ernĀ­ment is spendĀ­ing over Sh70m a year on pestiĀ­cide to head off the miĀ­gratĀ­ory pest. Moreover, with much of Sub SahaĀ­ran Africa inĀ­cludĀ­ing Kenya havĀ­ing exĀ­perĀ­iĀ­enced betĀ­ter rainĀ­fall this year, sciĀ­entĀ­ists are warnĀ­ing this can provide conĀ­duĀ­cive breedĀ­ing conĀ­diĀ­tions for the pests. Already, over 120,000 farm famĀ­ilĀ­ies in Malawi reĀ­porĀ­ted the deĀ­strucĀ­tion of 35,000 hecĀ­tares of crop in JanuĀ­ary last year.

The worst atĀ­tack was in Liberia in 2009, where armyĀ­worms atĀ­tacked about 100 vilĀ­lages and damĀ­aged crops, inĀ­cludĀ­ing cofĀ­fee plantĀ­aĀ­tions and pasĀ­ture. Over 500,000 people were afĀ­fected, and over 20,000 resĀ­idĀ­ents were forced to flee their homes.
