Sex trap tame devastating African armyworm

The African armyworm, scientifically known as Spodoptera exempta, is a particularly devastating pest. An early warnĀing sysĀtem using traps that fake the smell of matĀing feĀmale moths has deĀlivered a breakĀthrough in counĀterĀing the spread of the armyĀworm, which can move into an area and devĀastĀate enĀtire crops.
The over 2 milĀlion farmĀers in Kenya and TanĀzania who toĀgether grow over 7 milĀlion hecĀtares of cerĀeal, mainly maize, now say cases of armyĀworm inĀvaĀsion have dwindled greatly thanks to the early deĀtecĀtion under a proĀject deĀveloped by the Centre for AgĀriĀculĀture and BiosĀciences InĀterĀnaĀtional (CABI).
The African armyĀworm, sciĀenĀtificĀally known as SpodĀopĀtera exĀempta, is a parĀticĀuĀlarly devĀastĀatĀing pest. Large numĀbers of the voĀraĀcious black caterĀpilĀlars apĀpear sudĀdenly, leavĀing crops and pasĀture devĀastĀated in their wake. Once the food has been exĀhausted in one area, they miĀgrate to their next desĀtinĀaĀtion. With outĀbreaks are difĀfiĀcult to preĀdict, they catch farmĀers unĀaware and unĀpreĀpared. If unĀconĀtrolled, they can cause total crop loss, with milĀlions of hecĀtares afĀfected in bad years.

But unĀderĀstandĀing the inĀsect has asĀsisted sciĀentĀists in preĀdictĀing which areas might exĀperĀiĀence outĀbreaks, some two weeks ahead of acĀtual inĀvaĀsions. However, while such foreĀcasts are useĀful for naĀtional planĀning, they are of little or no value to inĀdiĀvidual farmĀers. GovĀernĀments often have inĀsufĀfiĀcient caĀpaĀcity for timely conĀtrol, with inĀsectĀicides conĀtinuĀously being ruled out due to their proĀhibĀitĀive cost and damĀage to the enĀvirĀonĀment.
The proĀject has thereĀfore put in place local reĀacĀtion and monĀitĀorĀing sysĀtems.
Early deĀtecĀtion is being achieved using factĀory enĀhanced feĀmale horĀmones, comĀmonly known as pherĀomones, which act as a trap that dupes the male of the presĀence of a feĀmale ready to mate. A pherĀomone is a bioĀloĀgical chemĀical secreted by feĀmale inĀsects or even mamĀmals that trigĀgers the atĀtracĀtion of a male to a feĀmale.
In the armyĀworm it is the basic inĀdicĀator used by male moths to identify feĀmale moths for matĀing with docĀuĀmented evidĀence showĀing that male armyĀworm moths are able to deĀtect the scent of the pherĀomone from a raĀdius of 10 km, deĀpendĀing on wind dirĀecĀtion.
The pherĀomone trap also conĀtains an inĀsectĀicide and once inĀside the trap the moths die. The farmĀers then count the dead ones after every week.
AcĀcordĀing to sciĀentĀists, more than 30 catches of the moths in a week is a clear warnĀing of a posĀsible inĀvaĀsion of armyĀworms. When this hapĀpens, an alert is isĀsued by word of mouth in schools, chiefsā meetĀings, churches and on comĀmunity radio.
The proĀject, which was piĀloted in TanĀzania sevĀeral years ago and evenĀtuĀally scaled up in other counĀtries, has also inĀvolved the trainĀing of farmĀers who in turn train othĀers within the vilĀlage.
IniĀtially, the plan was to train at least 200 vilĀlages, but the proĀject has exĀceeded exĀpectĀaĀtion with Malawi and TanĀzania alone exĀceedĀing the tarĀget. AcĀcordĀing to Jon Knight, an ecoĀnomĀist from the ImĀperĀial ColĀlege of LonĀdon who has been among the people inĀvolved in the venĀture, the foreĀcastĀing has been highly efĀfectĀive given the low costs inĀvolved.
The iniĀtial cost of trainĀing each vilĀlage was just $233 dolĀlars with an adĀdiĀtional $4 being used to buy the trap which lasts for up to ten years and the pherĀomone costĀing $2 a year. However, the cost has been furĀther reĀduced through more cost efĀfectĀive trainĀing, and has deĀlivered added beĀneĀfits in teachĀing reĀsearchĀers how best to enĀgage with local farmĀers.
The second phase of the proĀject inĀvolves the esĀtabĀlishĀment and exĀpanĀsion of a virus proĀducĀtion sysĀtem in TanĀzania to creĀate a natĀural pestiĀcide called SpexNPV to fight the worm. SciĀentĀists have tested the virus, as well as locĀally-grown neem, and shown that both kill the worm.
Over half of farmĀers in TanĀzania have neem trees, and can use both leaves and berĀries to fight the worm. But it takes a lot of leaves to genĀerĀate a pestiĀcide setĀting up probĀlems of bulk. However, the virus is much less bulky, and is being made so that it is held in a light clay soluĀtion that is then dried ready for reĀhydĀratĀing and sprayĀing.

The techĀnoĀlogy to proĀduce the virus locĀally has been brought in from Brazil and will iniĀtially creĀate enough virus to treat around 10,000 ha a year, and later to meet the reĀgional need of 100,000 ha a year. The proĀject is being funĀded through the ReĀsearch into Use ProĀgramme (RUI) funĀded by the UK DeĀpartĀment for InĀterĀnaĀtional DeĀvelĀopĀment (DFID)
The double breakĀthrough of an early warnĀing sysĀtem and natĀural pestiĀcides come at a time when the govĀernĀment is spendĀing over Sh70m a year on pestiĀcide to head off the miĀgratĀory pest. Moreover, with much of Sub SahaĀran Africa inĀcludĀing Kenya havĀing exĀperĀiĀenced betĀter rainĀfall this year, sciĀentĀists are warnĀing this can provide conĀduĀcive breedĀing conĀdiĀtions for the pests. Already, over 120,000 farm famĀilĀies in Malawi reĀporĀted the deĀstrucĀtion of 35,000 hecĀtares of crop in JanuĀary last year.
The worst atĀtack was in Liberia in 2009, where armyĀworms atĀtacked about 100 vilĀlages and damĀaged crops, inĀcludĀing cofĀfee plantĀaĀtions and pasĀture. Over 500,000 people were afĀfected, and over 20,000 resĀidĀents were forced to flee their homes.
