Position: Learn pathway lead

The LEARN Pathway Lead is a senior position which involves engaging with partners at high-level to rethink the learnings between regenerative agriculture (RA) and productive use of renewable energy (PURE) systems. The project aims to shift mindsets and drive systems transformation through the three interlinked pathways (Learn, Link, and Leverage). He/she will provide leadership, strategic direction and guidance on the activities and intervention within the LEARN pathway. He/she will collaborate closely with other Pathway Leads to ensure coherence in quality implementation and reporting. Work closely with identified program partners and local actors across the targeted Counties in Kenya. He/she will be responsible for driving the development and roll-out of the Learning agenda which underpins the integration of the RA-PURE nexus thinking into the program. A critical aspect of the program design is that the three pathways will operate concurrently rather than in isolation.

Job Description

Fostering Learning

  • Support evidence-based decision making for the program through opportunity assessments, synthesizing research and aligning evidence dissemination with the needs of partners and stakeholders to drive replication and scaling efforts.
  • Facilitate sector collaboration through strengthening coalitions and platforms at national and County level, fostering partnerships, and supporting peer-to-peer learning to advance RA-PURE nexus transformations.
  • Work closely with the MEL Lead and LINK Staff to generate actionable insights by building on existing initiatives, developing evaluation tools and metrics, and creating learning agendas for the program to strengthen capacities of partner coalitions and platforms towards nexus thinking.
  • Support the Communications team in designing and implementing strategic communications to raise awareness, share key findings, and promote the adoption of RA-PURE practices among diverse stakeholders.
  • Support in advancing systems transformation through facilitating the creation of joint RA-PURE agendas that enhance collaboration among ecosystem actors to drive the momentum for adoption of RA-PURE practices in Kenya.
  • Support partners to develop work plans and related budgeting to ensure quality implementation, as well as assessing and managing risk to assure value for money.
  • The Pathway lead will provide leadership, strategic direction and guidance on the Learn pathway activities and intervention, collaborating closely with other Pathway leads to ensure coherence in quality implementation and reporting.
  • Provide appropriate and targeted technical advice or assistance to the project partners and consultants on activities linked to the project.
  • Develop and apply training methods appropriate to the needs of the smallholder farmers and their organizations
  • Act as a focal point for any potential research project related to RA and PURE in the project
  • Support partner organizations in their awareness raising and RA-PURE capacity linked to increasing adoption of the technologies especially by the smallholder farmers.

Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in agriculture, Energy, or related disciplines is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in programmes in areas of learning, linking and leveraging.
  • Good understanding of the Kenya agriculture and energy sectors.
  • Strong leadership skills, experience in partnership development and deep understanding and experience in consortia management.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, with excellent reporting facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI)

Position: Senior Associate, Monitoring & Evaluation

The Senior Associate will work closely with Aceli functional teams focused on financial incentives and technical assistance across all five countries in East and Southern Africa where Aceli is active.

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluation (50%)

  • Support the implementation of Aceli’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Strategy and Framework and update it annually.
  • Collaborate with the International Growth Centre (IGC) and Busara Centre of Behavioral Economics to implement the evaluation of Aceli Financial Incentives and Technical Assistance program.

ESG and compliance (25%)

  • Support the ESG assessment for lenders applying to join Aceli’s incentives programme and engage participating lenders to ensure compliance with Aceli’s ESG policy.
  • Support Aceli’s Country Teams in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia with outreach and training of lenders on Aceli’s ESG and Impact criteria.
  • Coordinate the Climate & Environment (C&E) verification exercise conducted for SMEs registered by lenders as meeting C&E standards across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.
  • Coordinate negative screening to ensure that all Aceli supported activities meet our ESG policy through mapping SMEs receiving TA and financial incentives on a monthly basis.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree/equivalent in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Social Studies, Business Administration, or another relevant field.

Position: Post Doctoral Scientist – Food Systems Analyst

Employer: International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

Location : Nairobi

Background

The purpose of the project is to build an openly accessible computer model of the Kenyan food system, allowing stakeholders to investigate possible future scenarios and their impacts on diverse outcomes, including population nutrition, food trade, and environmental burden. The model will build upon existing successful SNi mathematical models, such as the DELTA Model® modelling global food and nutrient supply, and another concerning global trade in nutrients. The selected candidate will support the building of the model through data collation and collection, stakeholder engagement, model implementation, and collaboration with the modelling team at the Riddet Institute. The position will be based at ILRI Kenya with spells of time at the Riddet Institute in New Zealand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with locating data sources and contribute to the assessment of the quality and resolution of data held by multi-lateral organizations (e.g. FAO, WHO, etc). Further, assess availability of higher quality national data from government and nationally focused research organizations.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between stakeholders and end-users of the model. Lead and manage consultations with stakeholders to determine the most suitable data sources and outcomes for the project modelling.
  • Contribute to the building of the Kenyan national food system model ensuring that it has incorporated relevant, valid data to produce a useful tool that has good uptake by intended end-users (government policy makers, think tanks, NGOs, universities, and food industry decision-makers) within and beyond the project lifetime.
  • Advocate for the model and liaise with local stakeholders, such as think tanks, government departments, food sector groups and other industry stakeholders.
  • Organize, document and analyse feedback sessions on model development to allow stakeholders to evaluate progress against goals and steer towards best outcomes.
  • Apply the model to investigate relevant food system questions and demonstrate its capability through academic publications and wider dissemination of these results.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field: agriculture, food, nutrition, or related field.
  • Experience within two to four years of completing PhD.
  • Experience working in Low- and Middle-Income Country contexts.

  • Familiarity with food systems, agriculture, and agri-food policies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), especially in Eastern Africa.

· Researching and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, weather, and pest damage.

· Visiting fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples.

· Testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.

· Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing, and selection.

· Keeping detailed records regarding fields, customers, crops, and samples.

· Generating reports and presenting findings to management, clients, or other interested parties.

· Conducting training on products and techniques through educational presentations.

· Managing teams of scientists while conducting field visits or laboratory work.

· Developing planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.


Agronomist Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, agriculture, or a related field.

· Further education and experience may be preferred.

· Additional certifications may be required.

· Willingness to travel.

· Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.

· Proficiency with computers, especially MS Office and diagnostic scientific software.

· Exceptional active listening and verbal and written communication skills.

· Strong research, decision making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

· Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments
