Seed Review: accessing tissue culture banana seedlings in western Kenya
3 min read

By Grace Zawadi
Tissue culture banana seedlings are grown in sterile laboratories, making them disease-free, uniform and higher-yielding than traditional suckers, but sometimes hard to get in leading banana-growing areas, such as Western Kenya.
FarmBizAfrica has verified a list of suppliers below, with their contacts and details, that supply to the region.

When buying:
Ask for KEPHIS certification confirmation
Make sure the seedlings have been hardened (acclimatised) before delivery – it’s wise to ask .each supplier about their hardening process
Confirm the supplier delivers to your specific county, not just general Western Kenya
Ideally, plant at the start of the long rains in March to April to reduce irrigation costs
Check the minimum order quantities, which vary by supplier.
Buy directly from the institutions themselves. Avoid unverified sellers using KALRO or JKUAT names on social media.
