Fact sheet on controlling deadly potato cyst nematodes

Using arÂtiÂfiÂcial and natÂural nematicides smallÂholder farmÂers in Kenya can conÂtrol the potato cyst nemÂatÂodes (PCN), a pest that causes yield losses by at least 80 per cent.
In a study of 20 potato growÂing counties in Kenya Potato Cyst NemÂatÂodes (PCNs) were obÂtained in 71.8 per cent of the counties with Nyandarua County at 47.6 per cent reÂcordÂing the highest PCN field-incidence.​The situÂation is furÂther comÂpounÂded by the fact the Shangi potato variÂety grown by 65 per cent of farmÂers for its shorter dormancy and cookÂing time is the most susÂceptÂible to PCN.
PotaÂtoes are the second most conÂsumed food crop after maize in Kenya, however, proÂducÂtion has been on the deÂcline: on a landÂmass size of 133,532 hecÂtares, the counÂtry proÂduced 1.9 milÂlion tonnes of potaÂtoes in 2015. Over a corÂresÂpondÂing period in 2017 however, Kenya’s potato proÂducÂtion fell to 1.5 milÂlion tonnes off 192,341 hecÂtares.
With Nyandarua being the counÂtry’s potato basÂket, acÂcountÂing for up to 40 per cent of the total proÂducÂtion of potaÂtoes, farmÂers in the county now proÂduce 18 bags, from ¼ acre, down from the preÂviÂous 30 bags.

PCN, first reÂporÂted in Kenya in 2015, is clasÂsiÂfied by KEPHIS as a quarÂantÂine pest (a pest subÂject to ofÂfiÂcial conÂtrol and regÂuÂlaÂtion due to the poÂtenÂtial ecoÂnomic devÂastÂaÂtion it may present to an area) can lie dormant in soils for up to 20 years and inÂfects 82 per cent of potaÂtoes grown across 22 counties.
Potato plants afÂfected by the PCN exÂhibit the folÂlowÂing charÂacÂterÂistÂics:
- leaf disÂcolÂorÂaÂtion/yelÂlowÂing and wiltÂing
- root with cysts
- unÂeven tuber sizes on one potato plant
- reÂducÂtion in the numÂber of roots
- dwarfÂing of potato tubers and the plant and,
- reÂducÂtion in the numÂber of crops
The nemÂatÂodes causÂing PCN are miÂcroÂscopic worms, measÂurÂing less than one milÂliÂmeter in size, meanÂing they are only visÂible through a miÂcroÂscope lens. As these sympÂtoms closely mimic water and nuÂtriÂent deÂfiÂciency in potaÂtoes, farmÂers are often left none the wiser on what is causÂing a reÂducÂtion in yields.

Potato cyst nemÂatÂodes are spread by:
- ImÂportÂaÂtion of inÂfecÂted plants or plant maÂterÂiÂals and
- locÂally, by the spread of cysts through soil, wind, water and vehicles
The total proÂducÂtion of basic potato seeds in Kenya stands at 6,700 metÂric tonnes, short of the 30,000 metÂric tonnes reÂquired. AcÂcordÂing to KEPHIS, the inÂformal secÂtor in Kenya acÂcounts for about 70 per cent of potato seeds propagÂated by farmÂers across the counÂtry, this makes the curbÂing of PCN alÂmost imÂpossible.
The easiÂest way of conÂtrolling potato cyst nemÂatÂodes is the use of nematicides, which are chemÂical pestiÂcides used to kill plant-paraÂsitic nemÂatÂodes. Most nematicides are however burned for being toxic to the enÂvirÂonÂment.

StudÂies done in Kenya by sciÂentÂists from The InÂterÂnaÂtional InÂstiÂtute of TropÂical AgÂriÂculÂture have found that covÂerÂing potato plantÂing seeds with baÂnana paper laced with minÂimal doses of pestiÂcides durÂing plantÂing deÂters PCN’s from reachÂing the potato seeds.
In studÂies by the UniÂversity of FlorÂida Food and AgÂriÂculÂtural SciÂences ExÂtenÂsion deÂpartÂment cropÂping in Marigold flowers into potaÂtoes/cabÂbages has also been sciÂenÂtificÂally proven to reÂduce nemÂatÂode atÂtacks as they act as an alÂternÂatÂive host for the nemÂatÂodes, but proÂduce natÂural comÂpounds that act as nematicides. This kills the nemÂatÂodes preÂventÂing them from breedÂing. In time, the nemÂatÂode popÂuÂlaÂtion slowly deÂcreases.
