Fact Sheet: Orgarnic controls for aphids

FarmÂers can easÂily conÂtrol aphÂids by using some orÂganic pracÂtices, such as sprinkÂling ash, sprayÂing a neem soluÂtion or plantÂing trap crops and avoid the use of pestiÂcides which must be conÂtrolled for safety of the conÂsumers.
Use of orÂganic means to conÂtrol pests such as aphÂids do not reÂstrict farmÂers to obÂserve maxÂimum residue level (MRL) by Good AgÂriÂculÂtural PracÂtice (GAP) and apÂplied though simÂilar, but not alÂways by difÂferÂent counÂtries.
GenÂerÂally aphÂids atÂtack crops by suckÂing their juices (sap) makÂing them grow more slowly as well as transÂferÂring disÂeases from sick to healthy plants evenÂtuÂally killing the atÂtacked plants.
They (aphÂids) alÂways more danÂgerÂous durÂing dry seaÂson as they are washed away in rainy periÂods. They also hiÂbernÂate under plant leaves and stems to avoid much heat durÂing a sunny day as they have soft bodÂies which are easÂily afÂfected by much heat.
ConÂtrolling aphÂids
One, a farmer can visit the field or farm regÂuÂlarly to find out if the pests have atÂtacked the crops. If so, the farmer can reÂmove them physÂicÂally by pressÂing them with finÂgers as they live in large groups called colonÂies and they canÂnot fly away.
Secondly, a farmÂers can spread cool ash early in the mornÂing when there still dew which will enÂable the ash to stick at the surÂface of the leaves of stem. This will make the plant hard hence the aphÂids canÂnot suck the sap stavÂing them to death.
The ash should be spayed for three days to enÂsure all the aphÂids are killed.
However, ash from bamÂboo leaves, musÂtard or baÂnaÂnas should not be used as they are strong and can burn the plants. Wood or rice straws ash is betÂter.

Thirdly, a soluÂtion of a bar of a launÂdry soap can also be used by rubÂbing the soap on a basin and mixÂing it with water until it bubbles. The soluÂtion can be sprayed using a sprayer for three conÂsecÂutÂive days and the aphÂids will be cleared. The soluÂtion should not be too soapy or too waÂtery for its efÂfectÂiveÂness.
Also, a farmer can also use a neem soluÂtion to kill the pests on veÂgetÂables. This is done by grindÂing 2kg of neem leaves and mixed them with about 16lts of water and filÂter the soluÂtion beÂfore pourÂing it into a sprayer the spray on the afÂfected plants for three days to conÂtrol the aphÂids.
Neem leaves have a bitÂter taste and when it is sprayed on the afÂfected plants for the three days the aphÂids will go away.

FiÂnally a farmer can plant flowery crops such as the musÂtard nest to the main crops. This will atÂtract ladyÂbird which feed on aphÂids. They (aphÂids) are also atÂtracÂted to musÂtard flowers for necÂtar and when they get there to feed the ladyÂbird will feed on them hence wipÂing them out the far.
The musÂtard should be planted seven days after plantÂing the main crop to enÂable it flower at the right time and last longer and to proÂtect the crops.
