FounĀded in 2019, the One AcreĀ NyasiĀ CamĀpaign aims toĀ sensĀitĀizeĀ liveĀstock keepĀers, esĀpeĀcially in arid and semi-arid reĀgions, on the imĀportĀance of pasĀture proĀducĀtion as well as ofĀferĀing them skills and tools, preĀviĀously unĀavailĀable to small-scale farmĀers, that help them harĀvest, bale and store fodĀder to serve as feed in times of drought as well as ofĀferĀing them a supĀpleĀmentĀary inĀcome.

The proĀgram that has onĀboarded over 800 farmĀers thus far ofĀfers conĀsultancy serĀvices (on the variĀety of grasses suited to variĀous reĀgions, the best agĀroĀnomic and post-harĀvest pracĀtices) usuĀally overĀ WhatĀsĀapp. This AnĀdrew saysĀ owesĀ to the fact that most opĀerĀateĀ one- or two-acreĀ parĀcels of land makĀing it ecoĀnomĀicĀally inĀfeasĀible to reach every one of them.Ā

ConĀsultancy serĀvices are charged at Sh2,000 but offered for free to farmĀers who purĀchase propagaĀtion maĀterĀial (seeds or plantĀing maĀterĀial) as well as variĀously fabĀricĀated fodĀder harĀvestĀing tools,Ā ie, hay balers and mowers.Ā

ā€œOur unique equipĀment is purĀpose-made to cater to farmĀers with less than five acres of land. These are a mower fitĀted with a one-meter blade imĀporĀted from South Africa and a wheelĀbarĀrow style-driven hay baler,ā€ says AnĀdrewĀ KoriĀata, the proĀgram’s lead in exĀplainĀing its genĀesis. These maĀchines cost Sh 4500 and Sh9000 reĀspectĀively and are availĀable at Kenya FarmĀers AsĀsoĀciĀation outĀlets.Ā

ā€œThe devĀastĀaĀtion wrought by severe droughts in 2008 and 2011 in scores of liveĀstock deaths made clear the inĀadĀequaĀcies in fodĀder manĀageĀment knowĀledge for smallĀholder liveĀstock keepĀers. This presenĀted a clearly unĀderĀserved agĀriĀculĀtural segĀment,ā€ AnĀdrewĀ says.Ā

The One AcreĀ NyasiĀ CamĀpaign has maĀjored in the proĀducĀtion of two major grasses;Ā braĀchiariaĀ andĀ Rhodes. This is beĀcause they are both high in crude proĀtein, highly palĀatĀable, have vigĀorĀous reĀgrowth and most imĀportĀant unĀlike other fodĀders such as Napier, can be made into bales.

Rhodes grass seeds cost Sh500 per kiloĀgram with six kiloĀgrams reĀquired to sow an acre.Ā BraĀchiariaĀ is grown in splits which cost Sh6 for every split and three thouĀsand splits are enough to cater to an acre. This too presents anĀother earnĀing opĀporĀtunĀity to farmĀers who are often called upon to serĀvice farmĀers who are near them withĀ these propagaĀtion maĀterĀiĀals.

ā€œFor farmĀers we have worked with we have seen imĀproved outĀcomes in their preĀparedĀness to weather harsh cliĀmatic times by havĀing enough pasĀture to tide them over until the rains are availĀable as well as havĀing surĀplus pasĀture that we help them source for buyĀers for through our exĀtensĀive netĀwork of farmĀers,ā€Ā KoriĀataĀ says.

ConĀsultancy is a cruĀcial first step in fodĀder propagaĀtion; whileĀ braĀchiariaĀ grass has had a transĀformĀatĀive imĀpact in liveĀstock keepĀing, most farmĀers for exĀample reĀmain unĀaware of the fact that difĀferĀent variĀetĀies of the grass are suited to difĀferĀent ecoĀloĀgical locĀalĀitĀies: MuĀlato II is less drought-tolĀerĀant while other such as Toledo, BaĀsilisk & MG 5 are harĀdier and still thrive in arid reĀgions. ā€œOf a picĀture of lush green foĀliage off the inĀterĀnet you will often find a farmer havĀing grown MuĀlatoĀ braĀchiariaĀ in a hot dry area and wonĀderĀing why it perĀforms poorly,ā€ he ilĀluĀminĀates, ā€œthese are some of the pitĀfalls we help farmĀers avoid.ā€Ā
