Poultry farmers seek feed alternatives as prices soar
6 min read
As the price of maize hits an all time high, more poultry farmĀers are negĀlectĀing poultry farmĀing or reĀduĀcing the numĀber of poultry they keep to cushĀion themĀselves from the high cost since maize grain is a key inĀgrediĀent in feed manĀuĀfacĀturĀing.
However farmĀers adamĀant to reĀmain in poultry farmĀing even with the bitĀing times have found resĀpite in alĀternĀatĀive chicken feeds that are not only provĀing cost efĀfectĀive but also nuĀtriĀtious to the poultry. From traĀdiĀtional crops that are reĀgarded as nuĀtriĀtious to huĀmans like amĀarĀanth, milĀlet and sorghum to worms farmĀers are reĀcordĀing reĀduced costs amountĀing upto 40 perĀcent through these alĀternĀatĀive feeds.
ReĀsearchĀers have also thrown their weight beĀhind the alĀternĀatĀive feeds deĀbate arĀguing that the feeds allow for little or no comĀpetĀiĀtion with huĀmans in terms of conĀsumpĀtion like maize does. Maize is the prinĀcipal enĀergy supĀplier in poultry feeds, but alĀmost all proĀducĀtion is used for human conĀsumpĀtion.
DeĀmand for maize for human conĀsumpĀtion has so far outĀstripped supĀply which makes maize very scarce for poultry feed. This scarcity has led to an inĀcrease in prices of comĀmerĀcial feeds, which then has the cuĀmuĀlatĀive efĀfect of farmĀers halvĀing orĀders for day-old chicks hurtĀing fuĀture proĀspects of poultry farmĀing. The end product is a spiral in product cost due low proĀducĀtion and high feed prices.

The amount of maize reĀquired for human conĀsumpĀtion is esĀtimĀated to be 3 milĀlion metĀric tons. CurĀrently, Kenya does not proĀduce enough maize and about 10 perĀcent of the reĀquireĀment is met through imĀportĀaĀtion. InĀadĀequate supĀply of maize afĀfects feed proĀducĀtion in terms of quantĀity and qualĀity. Kenya is deĀfiĀcient in oil seed cakes/meals that are imĀportĀant as proĀtein sources in chicken feeds.
A reĀcent anaĀlysis of the feed inĀdustry shows that there is conĀsidĀerĀable imĀportĀaĀtion of wheat milling by-products from Uganda. In adĀequate supĀply of the key inĀputs in anĀimal feeds, puts the manĀuĀfacĀturer in a difĀfiĀcult poĀsĀiĀtion. This has thereĀfore birthed talk of alĀternĀatĀives for feedĀing chicken.
ReĀsearchĀers are already lookĀing at nonĀconĀvenĀtional sources such as piĀgeon peas, leaf meals, and agĀriĀculĀtural by-products for proĀtein supĀpleĀments. A reĀcent reĀsearch by the Bridgenet Africa on alĀternĀatĀive feeds reĀporĀted that bulĀrush milĀlet apĀpeared to be a good reĀplaceĀment for maize due to its higher proĀtein conĀtriĀbuĀtion, and that it could be imĀproved furĀther with lysĀine supĀpleĀmentĀaĀtion.
The reĀsearch also found out that raw piĀgeon peas were a suitĀable source of proĀtein at levels up to 15 perĀcent in chickĀenĀfeed raĀtions. The reĀport furĀther noted that BulĀrush milĀlet and piĀgeon peas comĀbined were able to reĀplace up to 40 perĀcent of the conĀvenĀtional enĀergy and proĀtein sources in poultry feedĀstuffs. The bulĀrush milĀlet which withĀstands hot temĀperĀatĀures is a comĀmon liveĀstock feed among poultry farmĀers in the semi arid Mbooni area of UkamĀbani, with the farmĀers reĀportĀing a turnĀaround in savĀings through these alĀternĀatĀive feeds that they only grind manuĀally and feed to their chicken.
The same farmĀers are also using casĀsava as an alĀternĀatĀive feed due to its surĀplus proĀducĀtion for human conĀsumpĀtion. However they first dry it to rid it off cyĀanĀide, the toxic proĀduĀcing fungus. This model of inĀtroĀduĀcing casĀsava is being chamĀpioned by Bridgenet an NGO asĀsistĀing farmĀers in Poultry keepĀing which has borĀrowed the model from European counĀtries like HolĀland and UK who have imĀporĀted casĀsava from South East Asia for use in poultry and pig feeds. āIt is posĀsible to change all this cry about exĀpensĀive chicken feed, if you look around and see for exĀample how much casĀsava is rotĀting in the farms due to overĀsupĀply. That casĀsava has been proven to be nuĀtriĀtious feed for chicken, and is readĀily availĀable,ā says Dorothy Mwende a proĀgramme ofĀficer with Bridgenet.
Mary Gikuni an agroĀproneur from Limuru area venĀtured into farmĀing fodĀder shrubs that have been known to inĀcrease milk proĀducĀtion in cattle by 20 perĀcent. She later learnt from sciĀentĀists that the same fodĀder shrubs known as CaliĀandra are very efĀfectĀive in feedĀing chicken once they are cut into small quantĀitĀies and even mixed with feeds that may be low in proĀtein.

The shrubs which are easier to grow, maturĀing in about 12 months, after which they can be regĀuĀlarly pruned and fed to liveĀstock for up to 20 years have been known to harden the shells of the egg and imĀprove the qualĀity of the egg yolk. Mrs Gikuni who couldnāt keep up with the rising cost of chicken feed reĀcordĀing treĀmendĀous losses, got a break when a felĀlow farmer inĀtroĀduced her to the fodĀder shrubs.
Within one year of spirĀited efĀfort she manĀaged to harĀvest her first leaves, which she mixed with feeds of lower qualĀity, with the fodĀder shrubs providĀing the minĀerĀals and the proĀteins. From an iniĀtial inĀvestĀment of around Ksh 2,000 in buyĀing and tendĀing to the caliĀandra seedĀlings, Mrs Gikuni now earns between Ksh6,000- Ksh 10,000 a month after exĀpenses. She is among the few supĀplier of chicken products in schools and hoĀtels in Limuru area. āI alĀways tell my cusĀtomĀers to comĀpare my eggs with those of chicken that has fed on comĀmerĀcial feeds. The difĀferĀence is glarĀing. The egg shell is harder and the egg york more yelĀlow,ā she says.
However exĀperts are warnĀing that farmĀers should be wary of the kind of feed they inĀtend to give their poultry and should disĀcuss it with the veterĀinĀary ofĀficers or exĀperts in feeds beĀcause some of the alĀternĀatĀive feeds might be poisĀonĀous or might afĀfect the qualĀity of the end product.Ā āAlĀternĀatĀive feed inĀgrediĀents need proper qualĀity conĀtrol from the outĀset to define the nuĀtriĀent conĀtent for a parĀticĀuĀlar source,ā says Dr Mwikali a conĀsultĀing anĀimal sciĀentĀist.
